History of mango:
Native to southern Asia, especially eastern India, Burma, and the Andaman Islands, the mango has been cultivated, praised and even revered in its homeland since Ancient times.
It spread early on to Malaya, eastern Asia, and eastern Africa. As The Persians are said to have carried it to East Africa about the 10th Century A.D.
How mango introduced to Egypt???
The mango was first introduced to Egypt from Sri Lanka, whose fruit, in turn, is derived from Indian varieties.
Then, it was the work of Mohamed Ali Pasha, who planted the first shrubs in 1825. The first mango tree was planted in what is today the garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University. Ironically, it was originally regarded as an “ornamental” rather than a fruit tree.
Cultivation of Egyptian mango:
Mangoes grow in areas where the humidity is highest, like coastal areas such as Delta Nile. They grow best in tropical regions. In Egypt, the governorate of Ismailia is the main mango-growing area. The soil and climate of Ismailia are especially favorable to the cultivation of Egyptian mango.
Mango season in Egypt starts from July till November.
Producing area in Egypt:
Ismailia, sharkia, Giza, fayom, Qera, Nobaria governorates.
These governorates are responsible for producing 88.8% of total Egyptian production of Egypt total production of mango which is 197 thousand annually.
The original wild mangos were small fruits with scant, fibrous flesh. Over 500 named varieties have evolved and have been described in India. Perhaps some are duplicates by different names, but at least 350 are propagated in commercial nurseries.
Mangoes can be round, oval, heart-shaped, or kidney-shaped; and can weigh as little as a few ounces or as much as five pounds. Their highly aromatic flesh surrounds a very large inedible flat seed. The soft pulp is juicy and sweet, although it can sometimes have an acid overtone.
